Number of arriving foreign tourists at Suvarnabhumi International Airport of Bangkok has significantly decreased from an average of 30,ooo per day to 21,000 per day. The situation is mainly related to extending escalation of political turmoil in Thailand which at some points turned to be violent in Bangkok. “Number of arriving foreign tourist at Suvarnabhumi has signficantly dropped by almost 10,000 per day”, Tourism and Sports Minister Chumpol Silpa-archa said on Tuesday.

Furthermore Minister Chumpol said that a proposal of tourism crisis recovery plan has been submitted to the government by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). The plan mainly related to extensive marketing efforts including wider cooperation with airliners and major travel agencies as well as public relation campaign. Proposed funding includes around 600 million baht for domestic marketing campaign and 1.45 billion for international marketing campaign. “However the plan can only be executed after normal political situation resumed”, he continued.

In addition, the government has also started various incentive instruments in order to boost number of tourist arrivals, including free visa program to be started on Wednesday. About 5,800 Chinese tourists expected to come to Thailand between 6th to 8th of May will possibly change their plan if escalating political unrest continues. “Economic figures will be published as soon as the political protests come to an and and the government will start to elaborate ways to help affected businesses”, the minister said.

United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) widely known as the red shirts has been rallying at Bangkok main commercial district of Ratchaprasong April 3rd. They demanded the Prime Minister to dissolve the House of Representative and immediately conduct general election. Backed up by the armed force, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva rejected their demand.
